Cleanliness is the most-mentioned factor in short-term rental reviews. Here is the turnover routine that keeps five-star ratings intact, even on same-day changeovers.
Ask any experienced short-term rental host what moves their rating and the answer is always the same: cleanliness. Guests forgive a slow WiFi connection and a stiff door. They do not forgive hair in the shower drain or dust on the nightstand, and they write about it.
The difficulty is that turnovers are almost never leisurely. A checkout at 11am and a check-in at 3pm leaves four hours to reset an entire property. That only works with a fixed routine.
Start with the reset, not the clean
The first ten minutes should be triage, not scrubbing. Walk the property, photograph anything damaged or missing, strip every bed, gather all used towels, and empty every bin. Getting the linen going first matters most — laundry is the one task with a fixed duration you cannot compress, so it should be running while everything else happens.
The turnover checklist
- All beds stripped and remade with fresh, pressed linen
- Bathrooms fully sanitized: shower, toilet, sink, mirror, floor
- Kitchen reset: dishes away, appliances wiped, fridge emptied and cleaned
- All floors vacuumed and mopped, including under beds
- Every surface dusted, glass and mirrors cleaned
- Bins emptied and relined throughout
- Amenities restocked: paper, soap, coffee, condiments
- Room staged back to match the listing photographs
Staging is part of cleaning
Guests booked the photographs. If the cushions are arranged differently, a chair has migrated, or the towel display is not the one in the listing, the property feels subtly wrong even when it is spotless. Keep a printed set of staging photos in the property and reset to them every single time — it costs five minutes and it protects the first impression that drives the review.
Report before the next guest arrives
A stain on the sofa or a chipped glass discovered mid-stay by a guest becomes their problem, and often their review. The same issue photographed and reported by your cleaner between stays is simply maintenance. Every turnover should end with a short report: what was damaged, what was missing, and what is running low.
