Las Vegas water is hard and it shows on every faucet and shower door. Here is how professionals handle scale, grease and grout without damaging the finishes underneath.
Kitchens and bathrooms are where cleaning either works or obviously does not. They are also where the wrong product does lasting damage, because the two most common problems in Southern Nevada homes — hard water scale and cooking grease — respond to opposite chemistry.
Hard water scale needs acid, and patience
Scale is mineral deposit, and minerals dissolve in acid. A mild acidic cleaner will remove it, but only if you give it dwell time. The mistake almost everyone makes is spraying and immediately wiping, which does nothing. Spray, walk away for five to ten minutes, then wipe — the deposit will release without any scrubbing pressure at all.
Two important cautions. Never use acidic cleaners on natural stone — marble, travertine and limestone etch permanently, and the damage cannot be polished out at home. And for a clogged showerhead, unscrew it and soak it rather than trying to clean it in place.
Grease needs alkaline, and heat
Kitchen grease is the opposite problem and it needs a degreaser rather than an acid. Warmth helps enormously — a warm surface releases grease far more readily than a cold one. Range hood filters are the clearest example: soaking one in hot water with a degreasing detergent for fifteen minutes does more than twenty minutes of scrubbing cold.
Grout: clean it once, then seal it
Grout is porous, which is why it stains and why cleaning it feels endless. The step most people miss is the one that actually solves it. Scrub the grout properly with an alkaline cleaner and a stiff brush, let it dry completely, then apply a penetrating grout sealer. Sealed grout resists staining for a year or more; unsealed grout is dirty again within weeks.
Small habits that save real work
- Squeegee the shower glass after use — it prevents scale rather than removing it later
- Wipe faucets dry after cleaning so no new deposit forms as water evaporates
- Run the range hood every time you cook, not just when something smokes
- Keep one microfibre cloth for glass only — detergent residue causes streaks
- Never mix cleaning products, particularly anything containing bleach
